The Four Hardest Jobs in America

November 24, 2006
by Robert

Peter Drucker, the late leadership guru, said that the four hardest jobs in America (and not necessarily in order, he added) are:

the president of the United States

a university president

a CEO of a hospital and

… a pastor [here]

I disagree with the top 3 on your list….make that the top 4. If not the first, then the second on the list should be Treeplanting.
I’m 21 years old. I finished my first season of tree planting about two weeks ago. I lived in a tent for two months. Worked 60-70 hour weeks alone on a clear cut forest in weather of all sorts. Rain, snow, hail, blazing heat. It was the most physically and mentally demanding two months of my entire life. I thought of quitting numerous times. I cursed myself daily for my first 3 weeks. I missed my family. I missed my friends (which never EVER happens). I hit rock bottom. Through a miracle of determination and pure stubbornness I made it through the season. I learned so much about myself through this experience. I learned my limits and I learned that I CAN do anything. I worked next to amazing planters, who could plant 7000 trees a day ( thats over $500), and amazing people from all over my great country, Canada. I want to keep telling more of my experience, but I will just say that I cant wait to go planting again next year :)
