Discipline, Renewal and Negativity

by Robert
  • Another week is gone. Fall is getting into gear, the evenings are finally crisp. The leaves are finally starting to fall. Christmas is only fifty days away!
  • I started going to the YMCA again today. I really need to work on my discipline in this area. I promised the guys at Discover Recovery that this is an area that I am going to work on and something that I will be accountable to them for.
  • Speaking of Discover Recovery, we are having great times of community and sharing and transformation. I am as excited about this five weeks into it as I was when we started.
  • This weekend, my parents will be at the Gospel Center for our Fall Renewal Weekend. my bonus-dad, Paul Gagnon (click here for the leadership interview I did with him) will be sharing his life-story on Friday, and sharing Saturday evening and Sunday morning. If you are in our area, stop by!
  • I received my first negative letter as editor of the Standard. I am not going to share the content or who the individual was although I am tempted to! The issue was minor, so minor I was embarrassed for the individual. Which brings to my mind something that has been troubling me. I have grown increasingly weary with individuals who only point out negative things. Don’t think I was offended, I wasn’t. In this letter, the indivudual included three excerpts from three different Holiness periodicals citing “editor problems” in all three. That is fine, and If I was ever in error, I would be cordial enough to accept it. My problem is how individuals handle criticism. If I received a letter stating how they appreciated the time sweat and tears that it takes to put a periodical together, but they have a concern that they would like to address, I would appreciate that a thousand more times than a simple circle, and a statement that only says “editor problem”. The Bible tells us to go to individuals and address our concerns, not to berate them. In simple words, when you address a negative, precede it with a positive.
  • Thanks for letting me get that off my chest!
  • Our pre-teen boys club has a new name, logo and blog and they are pumped about it!

I definitely agree with you, although I must confess that the whole area of criticism is one in which I possess a constant need of improvement. But given my career, I am more prone to notice typographical, editorial, and design errors than some people. For instance, on one occasion I found a typo on a relatively new hand blower-thingy in a public restroom, and I was whistling Dixie for the next month! I don’t know why, but I thrive on finding errors. The only problem is making sure that I handle it properly once I do find the mistake. But trust me, they are not only in the GM Standard…..they are also in Newsweek, US News & World Report, World, USA Today, etc., as well as a whole slew of books published by the most reputable “houses” in the world. So, honestly, don’t worry about a few obscure errors here and there.

    Allen,

I designed the logo and the “Play it” is designed by simply jr. high ministry. It is part of a curriculum that I am using.
