On this date in 1633, Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei arrived in Rome ready to explain his belief that the earth revolves around the sun. Galileo defended his views when he wrote Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems. He was accused of attacking the pope, Urban VIII, and the Jesuits. He was tried in Rome and told to recant his view and was placed under house arrest until his death.
