On this date, February 19, 1812, America’s first foreign missionaries, the Judsons and the Newells sailed from the Salem harbor aboard the Caravan. The journey to Calcutta took nearly four months! From Calcutta, he eventually went to minister in Burma.
In 1834 Judson completed a translation of the whole Bible into the Burmese language! His was not an easy road, and during the Anglo-Burmese War, he spent twenty-one months in prison. He ministered in Burma for nearly 40 years. He died in 1850 and was buried at sea.
I love his quote which is applicable to all of us, regardless of where we minister.
“The motto of every missionary, whether preacher, printer, or schoolmaster, ought to be ‘Devoted for life.’”
