On this date, March 10, 1747 (alternate date, March 21, 1747), John Newton gave his life to Christ during a huge storm at sea. Though he was involved in the slave trade, he became a preacher, abolitionist and hymn writer. He is the one who wrote one of my absolute favorite hymns, Amazing Grace.
“Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
was blind, but now I see.”
There is nothing more beautiful than to hear a group of men in prison singing that 1st verse.
Newton later wrote;
“That 10th of March is a day much to be remembered by me; and I have never allowed it to pass unnoticed since the year 1748. For on that day the Lord came from on high and delivered me out of deep waters.”
