On this date, April 6, 202 Irenaeus, one of the Greek church fathers, died. Irenaeus sat under the teaching of Polycarp who according to tradition was taught by the Apostle John.

Irenaeus’s most famous writing is titled Against Heresies, which is a detailed refutation of Gnosticism. Irenaeus refuted the teaching in Against Heresies that the true gnosis was in fact knowledge of Christ.
