On this date, May 8, 1603, Jacob Arminius was appointed professor of theology at Leyden University.

Arminius believed that Christ died for all and that people have genuine free will and that God’s grace is in most cases resistible. These beliefs of course challenged the Calvinistic beliefs and caused major controversy

After Arminius died, some of the Calvinists convened the Synod of Dort. This Synod , condemned the views of Arminius. Some Arminian pastors were expelled and tragically, some were killed.
