On this date, August 4, 1888, Mary Slessor boarded a canoe of a chief who treated her nicely and was willing to take her up river to a new work among the people of Nigeria.
She has been an inspiration and challenge to many. One story of her life has been so encouraging to me. At one point, she was overwhelmed and depressed. She knelt and prayed, “Lord, the task is impossible for me but not for Thee. Lead the way and I will follow.” Rising, she said, “Why should I fear? I am on a Royal Mission. I am in the service of the King of kings.”
