Rest in His Care

by | Devotional, Psalms

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters (Psalm 23:2).

It was a warm summer afternoon, and I was again visiting my uncle’s farm. I sat down under a tree and watched the sheep in the field. Some were lying quietly, chewing contentedly. Others slowly wandered toward the shade. It was peaceful, still, and calm.

Sheep do not lie down easily. According to W. Phillip Keller, four things must be true before they will rest: they must be free from fear, free from friction with other sheep, free from pests, and free from hunger. Only the shepherd can create that environment. It is the shepherd who removes fear. It is the shepherd who watches for enemies. It is the shepherd who ensures there is food and safety.

David is telling us that God provides the kind of peace that lets us rest. Not just sleep, but true soul rest. Green pastures are not just about food. They are about safety, fullness, and contentment. God leads us to a place where we can breathe, where our hearts can slow down, and where we can be still in His presence.

Then David says, “He leadeth me beside the still waters.” Sheep need water, but they are frightened by fast-moving streams. A good shepherd finds or creates a quiet pool where the sheep can drink without fear. God does the same for us. He knows that we are not made for chaos. We are made to walk with Him in quiet trust, refreshed by His Spirit, nourished by His Word, and strengthened in stillness.

Still waters do not come from rushing around. They come from time with the Shepherd. It is in those quiet moments that our fears are calmed, our thoughts are cleared, and our strength is renewed.

If you are weary, agitated, or anxious today, the Shepherd is calling you to rest. He is not asking you to figure everything out. He is inviting you to lie down in green pastures and drink from still waters. Let Him restore your soul.

Respond: What are some things keeping you from “lying down” in the presence of the Shepherd?

When we pray, we often measure God’s response by visible change. If circumstances remain the same, we assume nothing is happening. Yet Daniel’s experience reminds us that God may already be working beyond our awareness, orchestrating events and preparing outcomes that only become visible later.

When God’s Answer Is Greater Than Your Prayer

Daniel 9 reminds us that when we pray, God hears. But it also reminds us that God’s answers are often greater than our requests. He sees further than we see. He works beyond what we ask. He accomplishes more than we imagine.
