Waiting has never been one of my strengths. Like most people, I enjoy seeing progress. I like when prayers are answered quickly, problems are resolved, and doors open without long delays. Yet as I look back over my life, I’ve come to realize that some of God’s greatest work has taken place during seasons when it seemed like nothing was happening at all.

Joseph understood those seasons well.

While imprisoned, Joseph interpreted the dreams of Pharaoh’s chief butler and chief baker exactly as God revealed them. Before the butler was restored to his position, Joseph simply asked him to remember him before Pharaoh. It seemed like the perfect opportunity. Surely this would be the moment God would open the prison door. But it wasn’t.

Genesis 40 closes with a heartbreaking sentence: “Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.”

Imagine what those next days must have felt like. Then the weeks. Then the months. Joseph had faithfully served God, faithfully served others, and faithfully used the gifts God had given him. Yet he remained exactly where he was.

Have you ever felt that way? Perhaps you’ve prayed faithfully, served diligently, or trusted God through a difficult season, only to wonder why nothing seems to be changing. Waiting can test our faith in ways that hardship alone cannot.

Joseph didn’t know it, but God was not only preparing him for promotion. He was preparing Egypt for a famine, preserving Jacob’s family, and fulfilling promises that stretched back generations. What appeared to be an unnecessary delay was actually part of a much larger plan.

I’ve found that perspective easier to appreciate looking backward than living forward. It’s only after the waiting season has passed that I can often see how faithfully God was working all along.

If you’re in a season of waiting today, don’t mistake God’s silence for His absence. The Lord has not forgotten your prayers, your faithfulness, or your future. His timing is always purposeful, even when it feels painfully slow.

Joseph’s story reminds us that God is always working behind the scenes. When the time was right, one conversation with Pharaoh would change everything. Until then, Joseph’s responsibility was simply to remain faithful.

Perhaps ours is the same. Trust God with the waiting. He has never been late, and He never will be.
