When Life Doesn’t Seem to Make Sense

Have you ever found yourself asking, “Lord, why is this happening?” Most of us have. We experience disappointment, broken relationships, unexpected setbacks, or seasons that seem completely opposite of what we believed God was doing in our lives.

Joseph certainly could have asked those questions. Only days after receiving dreams from God, Joseph found himself at the bottom of a pit. His own brothers had turned against him. They stripped him of the coat his father had given him, ignored his cries for mercy, and sold him into slavery. To make matters worse, they returned home and convinced Jacob that his beloved son had been killed by a wild animal. Nothing about Joseph’s circumstances seemed to match God’s promises.

One of the lessons I’ve learned over the years is that God’s promises and today’s circumstances don’t always appear to agree. There have been moments when I believed the Lord was leading in a particular direction, only to encounter obstacles I never expected. At the time, it was tempting to question whether I had misunderstood His will. Looking back, I can often see that those difficult seasons became some of God’s greatest classrooms. Joseph couldn’t see what God was doing, but God had not stopped working.

The pit was not the end of Joseph’s story. Neither was the caravan headed for Egypt. God was quietly arranging events that would one day place Joseph exactly where he needed to be to preserve an entire nation during a famine.

That truth encourages me because it reminds me that God’s activity is not limited to what I can see. Even when life feels confusing, the Lord is never confused. Even when I cannot trace His hand, I can trust His heart.

Perhaps you’re walking through a season that doesn’t make sense. Maybe you’re facing disappointment, uncertainty, or circumstances you would never have chosen. Don’t assume that God has forgotten His promises simply because you cannot yet see their fulfillment.

The God who was with Joseph in the pit was the same God who would stand with him in the palace. His presence never changed, even when Joseph’s circumstances did.

If today’s chapter of your story is difficult, remember that God is still writing the rest of it. Trust Him with what you cannot yet understand. One day, you may look back and discover that what seemed like a detour was actually part of His perfect plan.
